Following tradition, the influential US wine magazine Wine Spectator made its Top 100 wines of 2007 publicly available on its website. The list will be published later in its December issue. If, in 2006, the publication's team chose four Spanish wines, this year the figure has doubled. A point to mention is that the best rated Spanish wines on the list are two under QDO Rioja and one under DO Ribera del Duero, although it was also a great achievement for two wines under DO Valdeorras to be rated in the top 100. A Campo de Borja wine and another two under DO Bierzo complete the list.
In order of appearance: ‘Torre Muga 2004’ (95 points) was ranked at number 11 and ‘LAN Edición Limitada 2004’ (96 points), at number 18, both under QDO Rioja. ‘Pago de los Capellanes Crianza 2004’ (93 points), under DO Ribera del Duero, was ranked at number 31, while ‘As Sortes Val do Bibei 2005’ (92 points), from Rafael Palacios under DO Valdeorras, was ranked at 46.
In the lower half of the list, a wine under DO Bierzo, ‘El Castro de Valtuille 2004’ (92 points) from Bodega y Viñedos Castro Ventosa came in at number 67; ‘Tres Picos 2005’ (90 points) from Bodegas Borsao, under DO Campo de Borja, at 90; another wine under DO Valdeorras, ‘Viña Godeval 2006’ (90 points) de las bodegas homónimas, was ranked at 94 while the next ranking fell to, ‘Pétalos 2005’, from Descendientes de J.Palacios under DO Bierzo closing the list of Spanish wines ranked in the famous top 100.
Wine Spectator reviewed more than 15,000 wines from around the world in blind tastings to make this year's Top 100 wines list. More than 3,500 of them earned outstanding ratings (90 points or higher on the 100-point scale). The list was narrowed down based on four criteria: quality, value, availability, and an X-factor that they called "excitement".
Thirteen countries were represented in the 2007 list, tying it with 2006 for the most diverse group in the history of the 19 Top 100 lists prepared by Wine Spectator to date.
